The Moon Base pods sit inside cutouts in the insert, and are held by a rubber band looped round two small flaps (note I've used a red rubber band to make it stand out; the originals will have been in natural rubber colour). The Moon Base furniture, legs and figures were originally packed in baggies and stored inside each pod.
The crosspiece is also held by additional flaps extending into its hollow interior.
